The state of IoT in India

The state of IoT in India

IoT is on a roll everywhere, and IoT in India is no exception. IoT adoption in India has increased from 12% in 2013 to 29% in 2017. The number of IoT connected devices has touched 50,000, which is double the 2016 levels. IoT development shows no signs of abating either, with the total IoT in India market poised to reach USD 9 billion by 2020.

More-and-more enterprises now seek to embed IoT within their business processes, rather than treat it as a distinct add-on functionality. About 46% of IoT adopters in India have already integrated various IoT-based technology to their core systems, such as Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP). About 49% of IoT adopters power up their analytics through IoT, to improve business decision-making. IoT outsourcing has also caught on big time.

IoT in India Action over the years

The spread of IoT cuts across sectors.

About one in every five manufacturing companies in India use IoT based applications to increase production and/or reduce costs. IoT enables process automation, actualize quality control, facilitate real-time tracking of inventory and raw materials, aids pollution control, and more. For instance, TVS Motors applies IoT to achieve process automation, enforce traceability in shop floor, pollution, optimize power consumption, and measure water flow. Hindustan Petroleum captures information from field-based sensors to capture temperature, pressure, and other site information, to improve process efficiency and safety. So is the case with V Guard industries, Kerala who has deployed IoT in their new commercial appliances releases

Various stakeholders of automobile industries use IoT to install stolen vehicle tracking (SVT) and intelligent emergency calling (eCall) capabilities in vehicles, and actualize usage-based insurance (UBI). Volkswagen’s IoT powered SAP system keeps track of the supply pipeline. Hero MotoCorp uses IoT to keeps tabs on vehicles available in different locations, to optimize sales and marketing efforts.

Healthcare has embraced IoT in a big way. Several IoT applications enhance in-patient care, post-discharge care, outpatient care, and also preventive healthcare. SUGAR, the diabetes management initiative of Apollo Hospitals, leverages IoT enabled technology, to monitor specific blood sugar levels on a constant basis.

The telecommunication is another big adopter of IoT. Bharti Infratel uses IoT to manage and monitor in real time fuel management, energy distribution, site surveillance of towers, and more.

The government is also now a big player, thanks to the initiative to build smart cities across the country. Such smart cities would co-opt futuristic trends such as intelligent transportation system, smart grids, digital signages, digitally optimized waste management system, intelligent water management capabilities, and more.

LoRa Network launched in Technopark, Kerala

ICFOSS an autonomous institution under the Government of Kerala who backs up FOSS initiatives in the region has come up with the LoRa Network in Technopark yesterday. State IT Secretary Mr.Sivsankar IAS launched the network at Technopark yesterday. Seminar on LoRa Network was also conducted as part of the event. Explanation of Smart water meter, parking solution using this network were also explained in detail. Lora Network will be available at around 5 Km range. Startups in IoT and educational institutions around Technopark will get benefited with this initiative. Since the sensor nodes require only low energy, the battery power may last up to 10 years. LoRa network which uses low range protocol will help gateway to achieve more range. LoRa Network growth in India is on a boom with Tata communications planning the largest LoRa network deployment in the world by 2019. LoRa Network implementation in Technopark is a major leap in the state of IoT in India.

Why Adopt IoT?

IoT gains widespread popularity on account of the real and tangible benefits on offer. IoT has increased revenue or opened up new revenue streams for more than 51% of IoT adopters. Companies invested in IoT have already received 19% returns on their IoT investment, per year, on average. There is also a positive correlation between the scale of adoption and return on investment (ROI), which greater adoption leading to better returns.

Overall, IoT adopters improve efficiency, reduce risks, cut costs, and increase market share or revenue. Vodafone’s Fifth Annual IoT Barometer Report reveals 81% of Indian enterprises holding IoT as the key to digital transformation.

Challenges and Solutions

The benefits and potential notwithstanding, the IoT marketplace is complex, with multiple vendors and multiple platforms offering piece-meal solutions. Worse, even when enterprises conjure up a configurable stack, it is rarely scalable.
In such a state of affairs, “SuperIoT,” Vodafone’s new IoT platform is noteworthy. It offers an end-to-end solution, bringing together all aspects of IoT. This industry-first solution enables end-to-end management of device and applications, offering connectivity, service, support, and security. Embracing SuperIoT promises a host of benefits such as rapid application development, seamless device management, and embedded analytics. The platform also offers a host of IoT solutions such as vehicle and asset tracking, tracking school students and employees, and more.

Such secure end-to-end, secure solutions spare enterprises from the complexities and hassles IoT deployment. Free of the complexities of infrastructure or managing multiple suppliers and providers, enterprises could focus their energies on innovation and business outcomes, with faster-time-to-market and unprecedented value.

Multiple vendors launch several other solutions, to further the cause of IoT in India. Two new offerings, which stand out are IBM’s “Bluemix” and MediaTek’s “LinkIT ONE.” Bluemix, a cloud-based platform, offers a viable application infrastructure and databases for connected devices. LinkIT ONE is a development platform to design and prototype IoT devices and wearables.

There is a consensus the Internet of Things (IoT) is the next big thing in computing, and that IoT would disrupt on a large-scale. However, the application of IoT requires specialized skills and expertise, rarely available in-house. IoT adopters actively seek IoT development companies as partners to fill skill gaps. About 75% of them use partners on an extensive scale to deliver or manage IoT projects.

The Theory of Everything – Stephen Hawking

The Theory of Everything – Stephen Hawking

Stephen Hawking is more than just a theoretical physicist with an Oscar winning movie out about him. He has contributed not only to the world of science, but also to those looking to learn a little more about life. Maybe you’ll relate. Some of his thoughts has an effect of keep us thinking. Some of them are given below:

“I am just a child who has never grown up. I still keep asking these ‘how’ and ‘why’ questions. Occasionally, I find an answer.”

Hawking reminds us to stay as curious as we once were as children. He shows us how to be courageous. Not everything is impossible, and through the impossibility, we can discover answers just by asking questions. Sometimes we might not get the answer we want, or an answer at all, but that shouldn’t hold us back us from questioning everything. Life itself is one big question mark, and we’ll never truly stop asking others and ourselves for the answers.

“If I had to choose a superhero to be, I would pick Superman. He’s everything that I’m not.”

Hawking, though brilliant and successful, still has dreams like everyone else. His longing to do things he might never be able to do shows how he’s just like the rest of us. We’re all human at the end of the day, and as humans, we can only do so much that our minds and bodies will let us. Hawking might not have the super strength or the ability to fly like Superman (he suffers from ALS and is bound to a wheelchair), but he does have intelligence far greater than any comic book superhero. Hawking has conquered countless barriers and continues to impress the world. He serves as a prime example in never giving up. Hawking continues to endure his degenerative disease and even through it all, he is accomplishing so much. Every once in a while you might find yourself trying to give up, but Hawking shows that setting your mind to a goal and going for it is what being human is all about.

“The past, like the future, is indefinite and exists only as a spectrum of possibilities.”

As we live day by day, we are in charge of the limitless possibilities. We have the power to do things so great, but these things are only accomplished in the now. We can look to the past, seeing the possibilities that were presented and think of the possibilities to come in the future. Right now, we’re given the great opportunity of life to go out and do something.

“The quality I would most like to magnify is empathy. It brings us together in a peaceful, loving state.”

“The human failing I would most like to correct is aggression.” He noted that the act of aggression may have had its advantages in surviving during “caveman days,” but it now poses a threat to humanity. Hawking then elaborated on the importance of empathy. He explained that empathy is ultimately what can counter aggression. The concept of empathy seems simple enough, yet it’s a human quality we sometimes struggle with. Empathy means to have a feeling of understanding and the capability to share another person’s experiences and emotions. I don’t think any one person lacks empathy but I do think that empathy is something that takes practice. And that practice can lead to great and positive change.

Stephen Hawking’s life is an astonishing story of a man who faced enormous odds and went on to become one of the world’s most famous scientist. Hawking has helped us better understand the planet, and at the same time, ourselves.

How the latest IoT sensors are transforming the world

How the latest IoT sensors are transforming the world

Sensors are the heart and soul of IoT devices, considering most devices transmit and receive information through sensors. The evolution of sensors and the advancement of sensor technology over the years throw open several innovative use cases, taking technology in general, and IoT in particular to new heights. Here’s a review of what the latest sensors bring to the table.

Interactive System Gains Ground

Advances in sensor technology enable devices to interpret images, sounds, and other rich data easily, without the support of powerful processing capabilities. As such, it is becoming very easy to develop user interfaces which react to natural speech, facial expressions, gestures, and other non-traditional inputs.

One technology which has caught on by leveraging such interactive sensors is on-chip audio processing. The technology does not require an Internet connection and frees devices from cloud-based voice interpretation systems.

Google’s project Soli, the new ultra-low power, a precision gesture-sensing mechanism for smartphones, computers, wearables, and other IoT devices. The technology allows users operate the device through gestures. The device leverages radar technology to virtualize activate imaginary dials, knobs, slides, and other controls between the fingers of a hand.

The Rise of MEMS

The sensors of today are becoming more miniaturized and donning the avatar of micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS). This enables permeation of sensors new applications, offering newer potentials.

Smart sensors embedded in products improve the manufacturing process. Such sensors may be deployed to set range and ensure process accuracy, control the process, and improve operations. MEMS attached to the end product may also be used to monetize products, and offer more products on a “rent” rather than “buy” basis. For instance, sensors could accurately track usage of furniture or electronic device, and charge users accurate rent.

Attaching low-cost wireless sensor networks (WSN) nodes to fruit and vegetable cartons in transit maps the quality of the goods on a real-time basis, based on vital parameters such as location, temperature, smell, jerkiness of the ride, and more. This enables a new FEFO (First Expire, First Out) model, and unloading cargo set to expire on an urgent basis, drastically reducing inventory spoilage and wastage.

MeetGlow, an innovative new product use wireless sensors to monitor electrical devices in a household or a plant and send real-time alerts to the homeowner’s smartphone. About 40% of the electricity goes waste, on average. By making visible energy use as it happens, users can cut waste and save money.

The Advancement of Sensor Fusion Technology

Sensors technology has advanced significantly, to the point it has now begun to mimic the human brain.

Sensor fusion collates information from multiple temperature sensors, proximity sensors, infrared sensors, accelerometers. lights sensor, ultrasonic sensors, smoke sensors, alcohol sensors, and various other sensors. A microcontroller fuses individual data collected from such multiple sensors, to get more accurate and reliable view from the data, and get contextual awareness surrounding the data.

The opportunities are endless.

  • Gaming platforms could acquire data such as muscle relaxation, heart rate variability, sweat, jerky movements, muscle contraction, and other vital statistics from multiple sensors embedded inside then smartphone, to detect emotions and make the game more exciting. A driving game could make the turns faster and more difficult to manoeuvre in until the gamer shows a more relaxed state, as manifested by a less jerky reading from the accelerometer.
  • The emotion sensing and processing capabilities made possible by sensor fusion offer many rich possibilities in healthcare, marketing, and other real-life situations. For instance, data from multiple sensors could reveal the number of jerks or the number of backstrokes, to analyze the way a user holds a cell phone to call or type, and thereby detect the user’s emotions.
  • Multiple sensors fitted in the vehicle and on roads could analyze the way a vehicle is moving, and alert the police of an intoxicated driver behind the wheel, for timely and proactive action.

The Emergence of Low-Cost Sensors

Side-by-side with the advancements in sensor technology, the cost of sensors has come down rapidly. It is the sheer non-availability and high costs of the sensors which have so far inhibited the widespread permeation of IoT into our daily lives. For instance, sophisticated sensors offer a world of benefits for freight transportation, but its use is still not widespread as the cost of implementing the sensor technology invariably exceeds the revenue generated by the freight trip. Reduction of cost of sensors removes this major stumbling block towards the widespread permeation of IoT.

The easy availability of low-cost sensors offers a wide variety of applications, especially in the logistics space. It also proves great and effective ideas need not be costly.

Until now, Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) was limited to office work. Low-cost sensors make it viable to replace dedicated, bulky and inflexible Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs) with smartphones already available with the drivers. Installing a simple SaaS-based application makes it possible to double up the smartphone as an ELD. Drivers not only get greater flexibility but may also communicate vital statistics about the trip easily and seamlessly.

Sensor embed smartphones may be used to scan freight, manage orders, take 3D images, and capture documentation. Volume scan of cargo makes it easy for the distribution centre to take decisions regarding the dispatch of the carriers without investing time into physical checking. This eliminates a good chunk of the unproductive detention time spent by the driver at the distribution and drop centres.

Advancements in sensor technology have the potential to herald a whole new world. The opportunities are endless, limited only by imagination.
